The ratio of solar heat gain through a product relative to the solar heat gain through 3mm (1/8”) clear, double-strength, single glass under identical conditions.

The Shading Coefficient decreases when heat gain is reduced. It represents the solar heat gain through the glazing from the total solar energy spectrum and has no direct correlation to visible light transmittance.

Shading Coefficient can be broken up into two components, long and short wave shading coefficients. Short wave shading coefficient represents the percentage of solar transmission in the range of 300 to 4000 nanometers. Long wave shading coefficient represents the percentage of solar transmission in a range of 4000 to 50000 nanometers.

== Units and Measures ==

The shading coefficient is expressed as a number without units between 0 and 1. The lower a window’s solar heat gain coefficient or shading coefficient, the less solar heat it transmits, and the greater is its shading ability.
